Craig Jennings, 37, of Richmond, VA, died tragically on Sept. 3, 2005 while vacationing with his family in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. He and his 3 1/2-year-old daughter were swept away by a rip current while wading in shallow water. Craig heroically saved his daughter, but in the end was unable to save himself. He leaves behind his beautiful wife Karen and their 2 young daughters, Amanda and Ashley. He was a Theta Chi and 1990 graduate of JMU. NWS Rip Current Brochure Image
Rip currents are powerful, channeled currents of water flowing away from shore. The NOAA's National Weather Service has put together a Rip Current Safety site that shares tips, forecasts, photos and other helpful safety information. The greatest safety precaution that can be taken is to recognize the danger of rip currents and always remember to swim at beaches with lifeguards. This web site is designed to provide educational material as well as real time information about the rip current risk. Please take a moment to improve your family's awareness of the dangers of rip currents.
